Lavender Witch launch “Awakening” album and zine today!

Lavender Witch

Brussels-based band Lavender Witch launches their debut album titled “Awakening” today!

Influenced by the riot grrrl movement, grunge, postpunk and female fronted bands, “Awakening” is the missing link between Hole and Bikini Kill. Lyrically and as activists we are inspired by second wave feminism such as the groups WITCH and Lavender Menace as well as by trans-revolutionary, anti-racist, and intersectional feminists of today. Our lyrics address feminist issues such as manspreading, menstruation, and rebellious muses as well as more personal stories of feeling like outsiders or being disrespected in relationships.

For 10 EUR you can get a physical and digital copy of the CD as well as a 24-page zine filled with song lyrics, Q&As and cover art. The digital-only version is available for 7 EUR. You can order directly via our bandcamp page or pm us on facebook.

(“Awakening” will be released on tape very soon too in collaboration…

DIY feminist zines + comix

Exciting news: I have not one but two new zines for sale!

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Let’s start with the split zine:

Same Heartbeats #16 is a new split zine which comes together with Forever Incomplete #12! So the zine consists of two halfs, one made by Kirsty and one by me, and we each made a cover for our half. After tableing at a zine fest in the UK last summer, Kirsty of the Forever Incomplete zine series and I decided to make a split zine on the theme of love. In the following months we wrote about a variety of topics including friendship, food, and fandom, and we published it all in this split zine.

It’s A5 size, 36 pages, colour cover on both sides, inside…

Elles Tournent – web designer on strike, bosses uncooperative

De Tweede Sekse Voorbij

What happened before: Elles Tournent doubles down on transphobia.

Strike actions at Elles Tournent continue. The strike started last week, as a culmination of failed discussions at the cinema group – accused of transphobia – led to the firing of their web designer.

Chronology

Internal discussions started in January 2019, before the film festival, when it was discovered the festival planned a screening of a movie made by notorious transphobe Nina Paley.

The team refused to cancel the movie, whereupon the matter was made public and trans activists, allies, and feminists started an email campaign. Elles Tournent still refused to cancel, instead offering dubious apologies and showing the movie for free. At that point both the web designer, and a volunteer for the festival, refused to cooperate because of the continuing transphobia. Flyers about Nina Paley and transphobia were handed out during the festival by the Collectif…

Elles Tournent doubles down on transphobia

De Tweede Sekse Voorbij

Elles Tournent, the “feminist” film festival in Brussels, displayed a complete lack of awareness earlier this year when they showed a movie by a trans hater, despite a protest campaign by trans people and allies.

They still haven’t publicly apologized for this, and now they have doubled down on the transphobia by firing the only trans member of their team – the web designer, who will be replaced by a volunteer who works for free. There’s a lesson about feminism and neoliberalism in here somewhere.

The web designer herself protested against the decision to show a movie made by a notorious trans hater, and the decision to fire her does seem to be a targeted strategy to get rid of people who don’t toe the company line. Too big a coincidence, as one could say.

More news as we get it.

FEL op pauze

FEL is er even tussenuit.

Oproep: e-mail mee tegen transfobie

Wanneer: zaterdag 13 oktober vanaf 19u.

Waar: Gent – gelieve je in te schrijven via felfeminisme@gmail.com
